The Randolph Rockets football team had zero problem with the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (WEM) Buccaneers Friday night as the Rockets cruised to a 44-0 victory. Randolph dominated the second and third quarters in their season opener on the road, scoring 36 of its 44 points over that period. Senior quarterback Jacob Weckop passed for four touchdowns while rushing for another as five different Rockets reached the end zone.
Randolph starts the season 1-0 and will host the Wabasha-Kellogg Falcons next Friday, Sept. 10. The Falcons lost their season and home opener to the Cleveland Clippers 41-0.
The game was scoreless until the end of the first quarter when Jacob Weckop hit Evan Bennerotte for a touchdown with 10 seconds left to put Randolph up 8-0. Less than two minutes later, Weckop threw another touchdown pass to Tyson Cooreman for a 16-0 lead with 10:52 left in the first half. Two more touchdown passes to Nathan Weckop and a second for Bennerotte put the Rockets up 30-0 at halftime.
Randolph started the second half by continuing the scoring, this time on the ground by Chuck Gustafson on a jet sweep. Their final score was a 15-yard scramble for a touchdown by Jacob Weckop.
