A handful of Cannon Falls Bombers fall sports teams started section playoffs play this week. Bombers girls’ tennis and the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams all were in action over the course of the week. Below is a breakdown:

Girls’ Tennis

The Cannon Falls girls’ tennis team had their team sections Monday morning at the Rochester Athletic Center. The Bombers, who were the No. 2 seed in Section 1A, received a first-round bye and then took on the No. 3 Lake City Tigers, who they beat 5-2 . Cannon Falls advanced to the section championship against top-seeded Rochester Lourdes and fell 5-2 to be section runners-up.

The Bombers compete in individual sections October 18-19 at the RAC.

Boys’ Soccer

The Bombers boys’ soccer team earned the No. 6 seed for the Section 2A playoffs and will travel to No. 3-seeded Fairmont on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. The winner of the match goes on to play either No. 2 St. Peter or No. 7 Tri-City United. Cannon Falls lost a close match earlier in the season to Fairmont 3-2.

The top half of the bracket is No. 1 Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa (PIZM) versus No. 8 Triton/Kenyon-Wanamingo/Hayfield and No. 4 Southwest Minnesota Christian against No. 5 Mankato Loyola/LCWM/St. Clair/Madelia.

The section semifinals are Saturday, Oct. 16, at the high seed and the section championship is October 21 in Austin. 

Girls’ Soccer

Cannon Falls girls’ soccer is also the No. 6 seed in their Section 2A bracket. They will face No. 3 Stewartville in Stewartville on Thursday as well. The winner goes on to play either No. 2 Fairmont or No. 7 Tri-City United on October 16. The section championship game is also in Austin on October 21.

The Bombers lost to Stewartville 8-0 at home on September 16.

The other half of the bracket is No. 1 Rochester Lourdes against No. 8 Triton/K-W/Hayfield and No. 4 PIZM vs. No. 5 Mankato Loyola/LCWM/St. Clair/Madelia.
