Jeff McCusker (left) and Mike Althoff are the new owners of Cannon Valley Mechanical. The owners are pictured here with Sam Valsler of Cannon Valley Appliance, who helps them with all of their appliance needs.

The Althoff and McCusker names are historic in Cannon Falls.

Now, Mike Althoff and Jeff McCusker are coming together with Cannon Valley Mechanical, a new home service company in town.

McCusker’s father, LeRoy McCusker, owned and operated McCusker Plumbing and Heating going back to 1972.

That’s where Althoff and McCusker met and began learning about HVAC repair and installation.

Althoff said the decision to form Cannon Valley Mechanical happened over the summer.

Althoff considered the idea after McCusker approached him.

For the last 10 years, Althoff has been a member of the Cannon Falls Fire Department and currently serves as the chief. He’ll continue to serve as the fire chief, as it’s still passion, but wanted to have a more normal routine.

When the chance to continue working in a field he’s always been passionate about came up and he would get to work with someone he’s been friends with for decades, Althoff couldn’t say no.

Cannon Valley Mechanical repairs and installs heating systems, cooling systems, and air purification machines.

One of the most common calls they have gotten since starting have been regarding air purification during the pandemic.

Althoff said they can install anything from UV lights or outlets to the works for people’s homes.

It hasn’t been a call they used to go on around Cannon Falls in the past, Althoff said. It has become more common around Minneapolis and St. Paul, but COVID-19 has motivated families to invest in air purification systems.

The business is operated out of the Althoff family hardware store on Main Street, currently being run by Mitch Althoff.

Being able to continue running a locally owned business in town is important to the owners.

“I think our main thing is … we’re building off of what my dad and brother have going on with the hardware store and [McCusker’s] dad’s business,” Althoff said. “We’re born and raised here. We want to give people options in town.”
