The Cannon Falls school board is looking to fill the seat of Anna Olson who resigned in mid-September.

At its meeting Monday, the board established the process for filling the seat.

Applications for those interested are available on the school district website under Job Openings and Volunteers.

The application asks three questions:

  • Describe your interest in the position.

  • What talents and skill sets would you bring to the position?

  • Identify the district’s strengths and opportunities.

Having the applications online allowed the board to adapt an aggressive timeline for filling the vacancy.

“With it being online, I think that makes a big difference,” board Chairman Bob Brintnall said.

The application deadline is Oct. 21, and the board will make nominations to fill the opening at its Oct. 25 meeting. Each board member may nominate an applicant for the position. If none of the nominees receive three votes, the board will decide what steps to take next, such as interviewing the nominees.

The person approved by the board must wait 30 days after the vote to begin serving on the board, so the earliest the new board member would be seated is at the end of November.

The new board member will serve until the next school board election in November 2022 when Olson’s term would have expired.

Olson cited personal reasons when she resigned. Her decision came after a contentious August meeting when the board decided to recommend but not require masks for students and staff.

On the Olson For Cannon Falls School Board Facebook page, Olson posted on Sept. 16 that she had tendered her resignation.

“When I ran for my board seat I did so because I felt there was a gap needing to be filled by a parent with younger students in the district. My family knew we’d need to make certain sacrifices in order for me to serve, but I had their full support. However, over the past few weeks it’s become clear that my being on the board is having a negative impact on my kids,” Olson wrote. “I did my best, and sometimes that means knowing when it’s time to step away.”
